The Importance of Creative Events in Changing the Region’s Narrative
Speaker – Misk Art Festival, Riyadh (2018)
On November 2, 2018, I was honored to be invited as a speaker at Misk Art Festival in Riyadh, representing Expo 2020 Dubai and my personal artistic practice as the Contemporary Bedouin. The panel, titled “The Importance of Creative Events in Changing the Region’s Narrative,” was moderated by Nojoud Al Sudairy and featured Saudi artist Lulwah Al Hamood alongside myself.
During the discussion, I shared insights on my dual role as an artist and cultural strategist, beginning with an introduction to my work at Expo 2020 Dubai, where I helped shape the cultural landscape of the world’s largest event. I highlighted how art, performances, and public installations at Expo 2020 would serve as a global platform for the MEASA region’s creativity, welcoming 25 million visitors to experience its artistic richness.
I then shifted the focus to my personal artistic practice, Contemporary Bedouin, where I explore the cultural and symbolic significance of the bisht. I spoke about how my work bridges identity, tradition, and modernity, emphasizing the importance of self-discovery in cultural expression. I encouraged artists and event organizers to dig deep into their identities, recognizing the layers of who we are as individuals, as members of tribes and families, and as part of a global society.
The conversation also touched on the evolving role of cultural events as agents of change, addressing:
The shift from aesthetic-driven creativity to more honest, confrontational narratives.
The responsibility of events in shaping inclusive, meaningful cultural discourse.
The balance between tradition and contemporary self-expression in the Gulf.
This panel reinforced my belief that culture is a shared human value, not bound by rigid ownership, and that creative events serve as crucial platforms for shaping identity, fostering dialogue, and pushing narratives forward. It was a privilege to contribute to this conversation and represent both Expo 2020 Dubai and my personal artistic journey on an international stage.
