Through the Lens: A Conversation with Ramesh & Neel Shukla
Moderator – Emirates Literature Foundation (2023)
As part of my collaboration with the Emirates Literature Foundation, I had the honor of moderating a special discussion with Ramesh and Neel Shukla, two iconic figures in the UAE’s visual heritage. This session, titled “Through the Lens,” explored the profound role of photography in chronicling the UAE’s transformation from the 1960s to the present day.
Ramesh Shukla, known for capturing some of the UAE’s most defining historical moments, and his son Neel, a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and designer, shared insights into their artistic journey, their family’s creative legacy, and the evolving cultural landscape of the UAE.
My role as moderator allowed me to guide an intimate and thought-provoking conversation, covering:
The UAE’s transformation through photography, from pearl diving to fort preservation.
The cultural and historical significance of their work, particularly in documenting the nation’s evolution.
The importance of family and mentorship in shaping artistic vision and creativity.
The future of their photographic archives and creative businesses, as well as upcoming contributions to cultural preservation efforts, including COP28 initiatives.
A particularly emotional moment during the session was when I surprised Ramesh Shukla by presenting the first edition of his book, featuring a photograph of my mother—a powerful testament to how art and history intertwine across generations. This deeply personal connection underscored the impact of visual storytelling in preserving identity and memory.
This experience reinforced my commitment to cultural storytelling, archival preservation, and the role of photography as a historical and emotional record. It was an honor to celebrate the legacy of the Shukla family and facilitate a conversation that highlighted the intergenerational influence of art and culture in the UAE.
